melons in orange & green, pieces of pineapple, grapes... their combined scents surround me and the air smells like sweetness....like sherbet....cotton candy....like summer.
I keep forgetting that Monday is a holiday. memento mori day.
Election results from last evening should ease my mind but it all just gives me more anxiety than I had before. As if the cause is so much more desperate...why worry about a battle if we might lose the war? Too much detrimental language flying about to encourage any one side to vote for the other. dum dems. My stomach knotted and I escaped into my Švankmajer shorts... a stop-motion animation respite. I'm avoiding my usual news links and burying my head in books until this passes.

"A game has to be replayable," Layne said. "If you play it one, two or three times and put it back on the shelf, it's not a hit. Modular gameboards (with pieces that can be arranged into different configurations with every game) make a game more playable because you can't master it based on the set-up. And it helps if the game has an interesting theme, something to do with fantasy, history, science fiction or adventure." - Himself

What isn't cool is that my friend Darren had an article written about his store a month ago and he didn't bother to tell me about it. A pox, my friend. What else is uncool you ask? I'll tell you....the fact that he hasn't opened a store in Portland. There, Ive made my gripe public.

Wedding festivities are in full swing. Met the gang at David's friend's lounge...worked our way over to the Virginia. Tonight is the bachelor party...Im not heading out to see the girls for I fear a heavy work load will keep me here late. :( London's new MacBook Pro is hiding under my desk and I may abscond with it if he doesn't pick it up soonish. Tomorrow is the rehearsal dinner then "expressway to your skull" certainly followed by tom-foolery till late/early. I've taken tomorrow off for hair appts and whatnot. Saturday is the big day. I cannot wait to flop down and sink deep into the bed at the Gov. ...brunch in pjs Sunday morning!
My performance appraisal for the year went pretty well. Better than I hoped. I seem to have unexpected allies and my raise just might be an actually raise this year. After reviewing it I signed it and in the comments section merely stated "I am made of "awesome" and "win!" It made my supervisor laugh out loud. It is now in my permanent file.
I have my new moleskine© ... THANK YOU Ceci-bean. xxxx All is right with the world.

"Toronto-based Science + Sons’ Phonofone II is an ingenious little device that uses passive amplification to turn your personal music player’s earphones into full fledged speakers (or at least, laptop-sounding fledged speakers). In addition, by combining horn acoustics with the audio conductive properties of rigid ceramics, Phonofone II requires no external power source or batteries."

"A new third-party iPhone application from Monster and Friends can record video up to 45 frames per second via the iPhone’s built-in camera. The developers are still working on a final version, but have released a limited beta which records a five second video and immediately plays it back. The final version will be able to record unlimited-sized clips (until the available storage runs out) up to 30 fps and will include an interface to save your videos. While impressive, this release is most noteworthy as a confirmation of video recording on the iPhone, a feature that is likely to be implemented either by Apple or through a third-party solution once the developer kit is released in February. In the process of cleaning my stove I lost one of the knobby-things(tech. term) on the range. It dematerialized. At least that is what Im telling myself, as it was there... then suddenly NOT. I havent a CLUE where the darn thing went. It is maddening. Now I dont know what to do as my stove is a bajillion years old...and I doubt I will find replacements. Can you purchase generic knobs? And will they reflect the right temps?

I will admit it. I like having a vehicle at my disposal. There. I said it. I drove to Lake Oswego, by accident mind you, last night...wrong turn-me. I paid for parking downtown so I could work through the morning at my own pace today. Without rushing. It was heaven. Took the car back at noon as I didn't want to destroy my nerves with rush hour traffic this evening...ran two errands in the process that would have taken me hours by foot and bus or bike. I will admit it. I like it. I have missed it. I have more time in my day for things other than commuting and waiting and queuing. I have gained time. This will be difficult to let go of.

It is my own fault, really, because I have 3 vessels at my desk with which to drink my morning tea...so going into a shop and getting tea in a paper cup :: horsdumonde is wincing:: this morning was due to the fact that yes, sometimes the 30+ steps and elevator ride up to my office is only feasible when I've had a bit of the ol elixir of life. So I stopped into City Coffee to get my drink on........
...and I always forget.
And then I remember.

Is it only me? Has no one else experienced this travesty? Has no one else complained? Am I to be alone in this revolution(wouldn't be the first time)? I empathize with Galileo(well, in general I ALWAYS DO).....I could not be silent about this any longer. I see the fools walking around with their cups...scanning for the tell-tale signs of drippage. I fear my efforts to rectify this horrible design injustice are futile. But at least I know, dear readers, that you have read these words...and know my plight...and all I ask is...for a hug the next time you see me on the street. That is all I ask.

One of the things I was most looking forward to about my trip to Boston last week was visiting the museum at MIT! Not only for the fact that I am a complete and utter "scientific american frontiers" freak, that goes way beyond my blind love and adoration of Alan Alda.... but also to see the work of Arthur Ganson in person... who is, to me, just a marvel!
I took a number of videos with my camera, but I haven't uploaded them yet...so I found some of my favorites on the youtubez...my MOSTEST favorite, wishbone wasn't operational the day I made it over...so Im glad I was able to locate some footage, even if it doesn't do it justice like being there and experiencing it in person.

They also have an exhibit highlighting the evolution of the microscope, at the mo, that is just simply lovely too! I need to get the photos I took of my favs up as well.
The MIT bookstore was heaven.....

Ive been on press the past few days. I tend to wander around the press room and grab discarded sheets of interest....which my rep finds hilarious as they have to go looking for me and usually find my arse-over-head in the recycling bins. Many times, while they are calibrating the presses, they run old printed sheets through the presses as tests. What results is an interesting mix of ink, varnish, and image-text layers & textures. Happy accidents. My last press run may be today...I have quite a pile of these forming in my office.....though Im not sure what Im going to do with them. Happy clutter.

| ~ The Virtues of Raw Oysters ~ |
[16 Jul 2007|10:06am] |

By JODY ROSEN - New York Times
-:{ SmutSmuttyMcSmutterson }:- IN 1997 Bruce Young, a collector of memorabilia from the early phonograph era, placed a newly acquired 100-year-old wax cylinder record on his Edison Standard Model D player and heard a surprising sound: a young man saying filthy words. It was a 2 minute 25 second poetic recitation, suggestively titled ''The Virtues of Raw Oysters,'' written in the voice of a sexually voracious woman. ''I never had it but twice in my life/Make me, just for tonight, your dear little wife,'' went one of the few lines suitable for newspaper quotation on a recording laced with curse words and hair-raising sexual slang.
''My wife and I just stared at each other in disbelief,'' Mr. Young said, recalling that first listening session. ''We were just amazed that that kind of language -- what you think of as very naughty late-20th-century schoolyard talk -- would exist in the 1800s.'' Mr. Young realized that he had stumbled on one of the earliest examples of audio indecency: a 19th-century record worthy of a parental advisory sticker.
Today it has one. ''The Virtues of Raw Oysters'' is one of 43 profane monologues, skits and other spoken-word curios on ''Actionable Offenses: Indecent Phonograph Recordings from the 1890s,'' the newest release from Archeophone, a small label devoted to early sound recordings. |

I once again own a vhs player...main motivation being the frustration of not being able to watch certain films from movie madness because they are not available on dvd. I am not a fan of double decks and the inevitable failing of one side that renders the other side useless....I dont like disposable technology....are there steam-punk media players? I would gladly employ herds of hedgehogs to run on wheels(only if they so desired) to fuel my media addiction....if I were made of millions I would commission such a device........in a second!!!<--emphasis. (I would also like an alarm clock powered by crickets rubbing their legs together...a watch powered by the breath of bird song, lamp-light powered but cat purring and a stove lit by the kinetic wagging of happy dog tails.... which leads me to share Theo Jansen...
